Derby Day March 10th. Get ready for the roar of the engines

Race Fans:

On behalf of Pack 254 we're looking forward to some great racing this year from everyone.

Our annual Pinewood Derby race will be held this year on Saturday morning March 10 from 8:00AM-11:00AM at The Vine Community Church in Cumming.

The address is 4655 Bethelview Road, GA 30040. phone # 678-990-9395.

You can see the Vine Community Church from parking lot of Pack 254?s home Bethelview United Methodist Chruch (BUMC).

Registration this year will be held the night before the race on Friday March 9th from 6:30PM to 8:30 PM.

All cars racing will be measured, weighed, tagged, and placed in a secure area on stage for Saturday morning races.

The tentative schedule is as follows:

8:00am until Tiger Cubs racing begins. Judging for best in show will also be occurring at the same time.
9:00am - Tiger Cubs trophy presentations
9:15 - Cub Scouts and Webelos racing begins. Judging for best in show will also be occurring at the same time.
10:45 - Trophy presentations for Cubs/Webelos
11:00 - Cleanup and reset

Good Luck!!!Tigers will run first and the top 3 in speed and show will be eligible to advance to the district race held just two weeks later.

Wolf to Webelos will compete after the Tigers for the top 3 in speed and show and will be eligible to advance to the district race held just two weeks later. Tigers are of course welcome to stay and enjoy the atmosphere after their racing is completed.

Attention! We will also be offering a time on a date prior to race day to come and test your cars on the official track. This is a great chance to come and see how your car does, especially if you've never done this before. There will be no timing devices and no official weighing or measuring will take place, however, you will have the opportunity to have your boy's car make some runs down the official track. More to come once everything is finalized.

Blue & Gold Banquet - February 27th

Join us February 27th, at 6:30 for our Annual Blue & Gold Banquet, located in the hall next door from Cumming Police Station. This years themed banquet will be Indian lore and we will be honoring those Scouts who have earned special awards and achievements.

For dinner our Pack will be hosting a Chili Cook Off and will be voting for the best Pack 254 chili, cornbread and cakes provided by participating Dens.

All wolves through weeblos are being asked to submit a pot of chili and cornbread for judging and eating. Rules for chili is to have the kids do as much of the work and have input into the chili as possible.

Tigers are being asked to bake cakes for judging. Rules for the cakes is that they have to be Indian themed along with the banquet. Again please have your scouts do as much as the hands on as possible.

We will also be having a table decorations contest. We would like for your dens to decorate the tables or make something to hang on the walls. You can make tee-pees, totem poles, dream catchers, etc. There are other suggestions in each of the ranks electives. Or for more ideas you can always Google for ideas.

Prizes to be awarded to Dens:
For the best chili and cornbread.
For the cake contest.
For the best decoration contest.

Please have fun with this. Let the boys show off their skills and what they can accomplish together as a team. We will have more news to follow.

End of Year Trip - Yorktown Maritime Museum

Part of Pack 254 tradition is to end the scout calendar year with an incredible trip for the whole family. This year Pack 254 leaders are very exited and looking forward to this years trip to the fantastic Yorktown Maritime Museum. The Worlds Best Campsite!
Located in the City of Charleston, SC. families will enjoy the opportunity to learn about life aboard a US Aircraft Carrier, the U.S.S Yorktown. Considered to be one of the top trips for scouts across the country, you do not want to miss it.

Friday, June 1st - Sunday, June 3rd

The trip cost:
$92 per person (Families encouraged to go.)
We will need your commitment and $25/person non refundable downpayment by March 15th and full payment by April 1st. We are required to have our payment in 60 days in advance which puts us paying on April 5th.

Camp aboard YORKTOWN Friday and Saturday night.

God & Me Classes Start Sunday the 22nd

God and Me classes will be held at the First Baptist Church, Cumming, GA starting in January 22nd.

God and Me is the first in a series of programs that the boys can participate in over the course of their time in scouting. God and Me is designed for our Tigers, Wolves and Bears.

If you have already taken God and Me in past years, you do not need to retake it. If you have not yet taken this class, I recommend it for all eligible scouts.

You can not take God and Me once you become a Webelos scout so if you are currently a Bear scout, this is your last opportunity to take this class.

Every year the North Georga Council Sponsors 2 Camping outings for all Cub scouts and Families one in the fall and one in the spring. Below are some picture of our trip last month.

Patriot Day (9/11) Campout

The Boy Scouts have invited us to campout with them Friday (9/10) night in the woods next to the soccer field at the Bethelview United Methodist Church. We are sorry for the late notice. Pack lightly as this is a 14 -17 hour total time overnight event. Those that can not attend the overnight are welcome to come in the morning but please be there by 8 am. There will be a campfire and smores and please feel free to bring any snacks you may want that evening. And you will be back in plenty of time to watch any of your favorite teams. The scouts will purchase the food for the breakfast so please let me know if you are going and how many are attending in your family.

Welcome to Pack 254. We have a great year planned for you. Here's some information to help you get started.

Your first meeting will be at Bethelview UMC Monday August 30 at 7pm (unless your den leader tells you otherwise).

You will need a book for your rank and a uniform. (within the next few weeks) Information on uniforms is available on the Uniform Information Page. The books are available at the same place the you get the uniforms

We had our year-end trip at the beginning of June, and had a great time. We camped a Monte Sano State park, near Huntsville Alabama, for 2 days. We spend the day at the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville on Saturday and the Sci-Quest Hands on Science Museum on Sunday. A great time was had by all !!

Always Moving Forward

On April 26^thwe celebrated our scouts' achievement of their rank at our 'bridging' ceremony. We also celebrated the bittersweet transition from one Cubmaster to the next. Rusty Martin has served as Pack 254 Cubmaster for 5 years, shepherding the pack through unprecedented growth and success. His son has moved on to Boy Scout Troop 254, and he will be following him to help Boy Scout Troop 254 continue to shape a new generation of leaders.

In his place, Robb Baker has taken over the helm as Cubmaster. Robb has worked with Rusty, Tammie Cagle (Our Committee Chair), and the district and council leadership to ensure a smooth transition and a successful term as Cubmaster. Robb is committed to scouting, its goals, and most importantly turning boys into fine citizens. Please take the opportunity to welcome Robb and and help him any way that you can.

2010 Pinewood Derby-- UPDATE

The 2010 Pack 254 Pinewood Derby will be held on Saturday March 13 at Grace Chapel Church of Christ located at 6755 Majors Road, Cumming 30040 [map]

Car Check-in at 7:30am
Races start at 8:00am

Boy Scout Troop 254 will be selling concessions so remember to bring some cash.

During our den meetings on March 8th we will have the track set up for practice runs at the curh. If your car is finished by then, you will have an opportunity to test it out.

Congratulations new Boy Scouts

At Monday's Meeting (2/22/2010) we had the honor to watch 12 Webelos cross over to Boy Scouts. Its always bittersweet to watch the boys move on since they will be leaving us, but its also a testament to the commitment of the boys, their parents, and their leaders. Good luck boys and "Do your Best !!"

Updated Calendar

We are now well underway for the new School/Scouting year and it has been good to see everyone again.

I've added the latest version of our calendar, which takes into account the changes we made for our new scout roundup, which takes place on Tuesday Sept. 1. This, of course is not for existing scouts, but for any new neighbors or others who wish to join Pack 254. They should attend roundup at Sawnee Elementary on 9/1 at 7pm.

Next week on August 31 we will have normal den meetings. The following week we will not have meetings due to the Labor Day Holiday. On Monday Sept 14th we will have a Pack Parents meeting to discuss the upcoming year and collect annual dues and explain our program to the new members we have from roundup.

On Monday evening, Aug. 24th at 7pm we will resume meetings at Bethelview UMC (unless plans have already been made to meet on another night and place). For most groups, Monday will be our first regular den meeting of the year.

Pinewood Derby

Our Pack Pinewood Derby is Saturday, March 14th starting at 8am at the gym behind Midway United Methodist church on Hwy 9 at Campground. Race day is about 1 week away! [Map]

In order to prepare for the race, on Monday night at 7pm at our church (normal Den meeting night), we will have the track setup for practice runs. Practice time will allow those who have finished their cars to run them on the track to insure they are performing as expected.

During our race, we will award 12 winners:
Fastest 3 Tiger speed winners
Top 3 Tiger design winners
Fastest 3 older scouts (Wolf-Webelo)
Top 3 older scout design

These 12 winners are eligible to participate in the Etowah District Pinewood Derby race on March 28th.

Take some time out of your weekend to help the US Marine Corps Help Santa. The Marines' Toys for Tots program needs our help to sort and load toys this Saturday, December 20th from 1pm to 5 pm. (If you can't stay the whole time, please come anyway, any help is greatly appreciated) Please wear your uniform shirts so we can show our pack pride and honor those who wear a uniform to defend our country. This is a great opportunity to "...do your duty to god and your country and to help other people..."

December 15th Pack Meeting and Dinner

The pack meeting is Monday night, Dec. 15th at 6:30PM at the City of Cumming activities building. Its on Castleberry between the 2nd Baptist Church and the police station, about a block and a half south of the square, across from the Tyson plant. The building is located in the parking lot of the City of Cumming police station. Find the police station and you will find the building. Park in the 2nd Baptist lot, or the Wachovia. The building is not marked, just a metal building, but it is adjacent to the police station.

The Foster House is catering our meal, $7/person at the door. Awards, pie to the face for top popcorn sellers plus we will give out pinewood derby cars. Our last meeting of 2007, so don't miss it. The family is invited!

Den 7 Takes Second Place at Cubmobile Races.

Bear Den 7 took second place at the Etowah District Cubmobile race. We also got awared "Best Paint Job". All of the boys ind had a great time at the race, and worked hard to build and race the car. Special thanks goes to Den Leader Paul Brach, who supervised building the cubmobile (and who has lots of cool tools) and to Sondra Withrow, who Supervised the painting of the award winning paint job.
